Class & Workshop Schedule

Do the Mu Workshops

FREE workshops for all ages! Do the Mu is the first Saturday of every month. Attendees are welcome to stay as short or long as they would like. Join us for a different art or history museum workshop taught by local artists or Museum staff. Try something new! 

Upcoming Do the Mu: Saturday, May 4, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. with Susan Mentrak. Create your own Gee's Bend quilt-inspired collage! This program is held in conjunction with the 2024 NEA Big Read. 

Ceramics Open Studio

Ceramics Open Studio takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. When you register, select your preferred day, and stay for as short or as long as you would like during the 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. time frame! The cost for Open Studio is $50 per nonmember per month, or $40 per member per month. Attendees may bring their own clay or purchase a 25-pound bag of clay from MassMu for $25. Any outside clay must be approved by the Ceramics Studio Manager. All Open Studio registrants must have taken a pottery class previously, whether at MassMu or another institution, and must complete a screening survey to show they are comfortable working independently because Open Studio is not led by an instructor. The MassMu LL kilns fire at 04/06 for bisque firing and 6 for glaze firing. Please note the Massillon Museum Ceramics Studio is an educational space operated by a nonprofit organization and therefore cannot accommodate production potters.

Virtual Yoga Museum Workshop with Leslie Schneider
Virtual Yoga

Enjoy relaxing Virtual Yoga sessions led by instructor Leslie Schneider! Videos can be accessed via MassMu's Facebook and YouTube pages free of charge.

Lunchtime Yoga

Lunchtime Yoga takes place at MassMu each Friday from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Join certified yoga instructors for a relaxing yoga session on the MassMu lawn. Rain/cold location is inside the Museum. Relax and refocus as you are guided through your practice. Students must bring their own mats and it is recommended that they bring their own props. This class is beginner friendly. All ages and levels are welcome. The cost is $6 per class or $15 per 3-class bundle. Register upon arrival at the Museum!

Wheel Throwing with CJ Ritenour

Join CJ Ritenour for a wheel throwing class series! Introductory and intermediate levels welcome. Ages 18 and older. The fee, $215/member and $245/nonmember, includes all eight dates, tools, and firing. Clay purchased separately: $25/25 pounds. The class will take place on Thursdays, April 4, April 11, April 18, May 9, May 16, May 23, May 30, and June 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. each date.

Tots 'n' Pots

Children ages three through eight are invited to make their own clay masterpieces in the Massillon Museum’s Tots 'n' Pots class on Sunday, May 5, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.! Registration can be completed at MassMu.org/Tickets or by calling 330-833-4061. The fee, $25 ($20 for MassMu members) per adult/child pair, includes all supplies.

The Massillon Museum’s ceramics studio is located in the former Chamber of Commerce office at the corner of Lincoln Way East and City Hall Street. It is accessed through the Museum’s main entrance. The Massillon Museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way East (Ohio Route 172) in downtown Massillon. A visit to the Massillon Museum is always free and everyone is welcome. Free parking is available on adjacent streets and in nearby city lots.

Introduction to Papermaking

Join Jessika Raisor for an Introduction to Papermaking Workshop on Saturday, May 11, from 1:00-2:30 p.m.! Attendees aged 8 and older will learn how paper was historically made from start to finish. Students will make paper pulp by hand using recycled materials, dyeing paper with various colors, and creating several sheets to bring home. Papermaking is a hands-on, water-based activity, and is engaging for kids and adults. Once dry, the paper will be suitable for most mediums, including pencil, ink, and acrylic paint.

Art 101

Children in grades 4 through 9 are invited to join instructor Angelina Verginis on Thursday, May 16, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for Art 101! Students will make original works in various media. The fee ($15/MassMu member or $20/nonmember) includes all supplies.

Art Exploration Workshop-Create Your Own Masterpiece

Children in Pre-K through grade 3 are invited to join instructor Angelina Verginis at MassMu on Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for an Art Exploration Workshop! An adult must stay with any preschool-age registrant. Students will make original art in various media. Fee includes all supplies. 

The cost for each workshop is $25/MassMu member or $30/nonmember. Registration can be completed at MassMu.org/Tickets or by calling 330-833-4061. 

Nature and Landscape Photography with Cara Gaetano

Join photographer Cara Gaetano for a Nature and Landscape Photography class on Saturday, May 18; Thursday, May 23; Saturday, June 1; and Thursday, June 6. The class will meet in person at the Massillon Museum from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on May 18 and 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on June 1, and via Zoom from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on May 23 and June 6. Students will learn the best approaches to capturing nature photography using some basic compositional techniques. There will also be a short lecture at the beginning of the first class where the instructor will talk to students about some elements that make a well-composed nature photo. When the class meets in person, the instructor will take students to shoot at offsite nature locations; students should plan to be outside and wear comfortable footwear. Should inclement weather pose a risk, the in-person class rain dates will be Sunday, May 19, and Sunday, June 2.

This class is held in connection with Precarious Legacies: Exposures of a Fleeting Landscape, featuring photographic images by Ansel Adams and Nell Dorr, and on view in the Massillon Museum’s Photography Gallery through July 2024.

Air Plant Terrariums Workshop with Lepley & Co.

Adults and children ages 8 and older are invited to join the Lepley & Co. team at MassMu on Sunday, May 19, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.! Register at MassMu.org/Tickets or by calling 330-833-4061. Please register by Thursday, May 16, to reserve your spot! A parent or guardian must purchase a ticket and remain for the duration of the workshop with any minor registrant.

Come celebrate poetry in the Fred F. Silk Community Room at the Massillon Museum on Saturday, June 22, at 3:30 p.m.! Read your original poems or writing from your favorite poet. All ages are welcome to participate or attend! Hosted by Expanding Circles Collective, LLC.

Brown Bag Lunch featuring Willis Gordon: "A Legacy of Progress"

Join the Massillon Museum for Brown Bag Lunch on Tuesday, April 23, from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Admission to Brown Bag Lunches is always free. The Museum provides free cookies and coffee for attendees. Guests can purchase sandwiches, salad, and smoothies at Greatness Cafe in the Museum lobby, or they can bring their own lunches. 

No registration is necessary for this free event. 

Rhythms presents: Rev. Robert B. Jones Sr.

Join the Massillon Museum for the first Rhythms concert of the year on Thursday, April 25, featuring Rev. Robert Jones Sr.! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:00 p.m.

Sit & Sketch with Massillon Community Arts Council

Join members of the Massillon Community Arts Council on Saturday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m. to create art inspired by Home Again, on view in the Massillon Museum's Main Gallery. Then, enjoy an artist panel featuring the artists from the exhibition at 3:00 p.m. in Gessner Hall.

Dry media only--graphite, color pencil, or art crayon. Attendees must bring their own supplies.

Live Virtual Keynote with Yaa Gyasi

Join the Massillon Museum for the live online NEA Big Read Keynote with Homegoing author Yaa Gyasi. The audience is welcome to submit questions during the program, which will be livestreamed via the Museum's Facebook Page on Thursday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. A Facebook account is not required to view the program. The program will be recorded and will remain available on the Museum's Facebook and YouTube pages for two weeks. 

No registration necessary. 

One-Act Plays at Lincoln Theatre

Enjoy four original One-Act plays authored by local black playwrights, Dr. Tameka Ellington, Willis Gordon, Olivia Matthews, and RA Washington, and directed by Stacie Morgan at the Lions Lincoln Theatre on Friday, May 3, at 7:00 p.m. The Lions Lincoln Theatre is located at 156 Lincoln Way E, Massillon, OH 44646.

Local History & Genealogy Fair

Visit the Massillon Museum on Saturday, May 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a Local History & Genealogy Fair! Visit more than twenty booths. Cosponsored by the Massillon Museum, Massillon Public Library, Massillon Local History and Genealogy Society, and Stark Library. 

No registration is necessary for this free event.

Cancellation Policy

If the Massillon Museum cancels a class or workshop, the Museum will issue a refund to all registered individuals.

The Massillon Museum respectfully requests at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations. This will allow us to offer your spot to another student. Refund requests received from students will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Cancellations made 48 hours or more in advance of the program date will receive a 100% refund. Cancellations made within 36 hours of the program date will receive a 50% refund. Missed programs or cancellations made within 24 hours of the program date will not receive a refund. Refunded students will be responsible for paying any payment processing fees.

Program Discounts

through Museums for All and Blue Star Museums

The Massillon Museum first became a Blue Star Museum in 2014. As a Blue Star Museum, the Massillon Museum offers a discount on museum workshop classes, event tickets, and Museum shop purchases to the nation's active duty military personnel currently serving in the United States Military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard (including Reservists, National Guardsman regardless of status, US Public Health Commissioned Corps, and NOAA Commissioned Corps)—and up to five family members. The Blue Star Museums program runs from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day each year, but active duty military personnel are able to receive these discounts at MassMu year-round upon request.
