"General" Jacob Coxey
Jacob S. Coxey is an important part of not only Massillon history, but our national history as well. He had numerous ideas on politics and financial issues, many of which were ahead of his time. His ideas, along with others who shared his beliefs, would lead to the first march on Washington, D.C. He spent his life dedicated to his businesses, some successful others not, and to politics, in which he ran for many political offices.
Russell & Company
Russell & Company opened in the 1840s and continued into the 1950s, when it merged to become Griscom Russell. Russell & Company was Massillon's largest employer in 1905. Their steam engines were shipped all over the world.
Massillon Businesses

City Development
Massillon has undergone major changes in the 20th century, many spurred on by hopes for new business and residential life in the downtown. Several plans for the 1960s-1990s are displayed here. From 1939-1951 Massillon focused on the Flood Control Project through the Massillon Conservancy District. With major flooding in 1904, 1913, and 1935, Massillon was threatened with damage to buildings and its people by spring flooding each year. In the 1930s, the city undertook the rerouting of the Tuscarawas River and the building of 3 viaducts: Lincoln Way, Cherry Street, and Tremont Ave.
