Nature Configurations: The Drawings of Sandra Benny

In Studio M October 12-December 1, 2019

The next Studio M exhibition at the Massillon Museum, Nature Configurations: The Drawings of Sandra Benny, will be on view from October 12 through December 1, 2019. The opening reception on Saturday, October 12, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., will be free and open to everyone. No reservations are needed.

A Cleveland native, Benny majored in studio arts and advertising design, earning a BFA at Ohio University. She completed her MA in painting and drawing at Northern Illinois University. She and her husband, artist Richard Vaux, pursued their art careers for 47 years on Long Island, NY. Vaux and Benny’s son, also an artist, is a director of the television show, Family Guy. Benny and Vaux now live in Hudson, Ohio.

Benny worked as an artist in her own studio and taught design, color theory, painting, and drawing as an adjunct professor of art at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus in Brookville, NY. She has shown her work throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums throughout the East Coast and she has gallery affiliations in Manhattan and Connecticut.

“I am so overwhelmed by nature. The details and colors in feathers and flowers are exquisite. Very often I concentrate on drawing the intricate detail of the internal section of a flower and enlarge it to form a design by itself. This same approach to feathers reveals fascinating nuances of color changes on the barbs and shafts,” Benny writes. “Each completed work is my statement about how fortunate we are to have such beauty all around us. My hope is not to lose any single species of flowers or birds now or in the future to pollution and destruction of this earth.”

In addition to New Configurations in Studio M, guests on October 12 can visit other MassMu exhibitions—A Heritage of Harvest: The Industry of Agriculture in Western Stark County (Aultman Health Foundation Gallery through October 13, 2019); 125 Years of the Greatest High School Rivalry and Evolution of the Football Jersey (Paul Brown Museum through January 12, 2020); Artwork by Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Massillon (Fred F. Silk Community Room Gallery through November 10, 2019); and The Immel Circus (always on view).

The Massillon Museum receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark.
