Studio M: Recent Landscapes by Charles Basham and Eileen Dorsey

The Massillon Museum will celebrate the opening of Recent Landscapes, paintings by Charles Basham and Eileen Dorsey, on Saturday, March 2, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a reception for the artists in Studio M gallery. The party is free and open to everyone.

Both painters approach landscape as their main subject and both employ bold mark making along with an intensely colorful palette.

Basham’s process begins with making an “immediate record of the light, color and the air” around him in painting studies, which are then developed into large scale works. He amplifies the color beyond the ordinary in the process of resolving the painting. Basham states, “The paintings are a product of how I see and respond to the landscape and how the images form a personal narrative.”

Basham resides in Medina, Ohio and teaches painting at Kent State University. He earned an MFA in Painting from Kent State University in 1979. He has shown his work nationally for many decades, with a focus on North Carolina and Pennsylvania in recent solo exhibitions.  His paintings are found in numerous private and corporate collections.

Dorsey explores boundaries between abstraction and representation.  Her landscapes focus on heavily wooded areas. Her subject is linked to her childhood experience playing in the woods. Dorsey uses spontaneous mark-making and employs chance as a factor in her picture making. Dorsey’s painting tool of choice is a palette knife, which creates a rich impasto painting surface in her work.

Dorsey is a Cleveland native who graduated from Kent State University with a BFA in painting in 2006. Since then she has shown her work regionally and nationally.  In 2011 she was awarded First Place from the 12th Annual National Arts Program Exhibit. Later that year, Dorsey participated in an artist residency at Vermont Studio Center.  Her work is found in public and private collections, including Southwest General Hospital and University Hospital’s Case Medical Center.

The Recent Landscapes exhibition can be seen through April 20 during regular Museum hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Massillon Museum receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark.
