The Fred F. Silk Community Room

The Silk Room is located on the Lower Level of the Museum. It is available for rent to members only (individual, family, or business) during regular museum hours. It is a suitable space for meetings, parties or other gatherings. Capacity is for 54 people sitting, or up to 100 standing.
Please note that the Silk Room is also the home of Studio M, an exhibition space for local artists. Artwork must not be disturbed during the rental.

Access:

  • Regular Museum hours only, Tuesday-Saturday 9.30am-5pm, Sunday 2-5pm.
  • All trash must be emptied/removed at the end of the rental.

    Rental includes use of:

  • 10 six-foot tables & 54 chairs. You are responsible for setting up and taking down any furniture used.
  • A refrigerator/freezer, sink, coffee pot, and ample counter space.
  • Use of the Silk Room only. All other lower level areas remain available for Museum staff and visitor use—lobby, restrooms, classrooms, coat rack, and offices.

    Rates:

  • Members Only: $25 Individual Membership, $35 Family Membership
  • $50 for members only
  • 10% discount for Museum members who are Massillon residents
  • Free to local non-profit organizations during museum opening hours only (with proof of non-profit status)
  • $25 refundable cleaning deposit

    Gallery

    The Gallery may be rented with special permission from the Executive Director, depending on the gallery exhibition. The room may be opened for show only. The capacity for the gallery is 200 seated, 250 standing. Food and drink is not permitted in the gallery. A band may be hired for the Gallery, but the Museum has no sound system for its use. A non-refundable $100 rental deposit is required for the gallery. The balance is due 30 days before the event. Access:

  • by special arrangement during regular museum hours, or after hours from 5pm to 11pm (closing, all take down and clean up must be completed).
  • All trash must be emptied/removed at the end of the rental.

    Rental includes use of:

    Important Information About the Massillon Museum Rentals Policy:

    1. Massillon Museum. We are an art and history museum that has been in Massillon for over 75 years. We have over 100,000 objects in our permanent collection, and change exhibitions in our galleries several times a year. We are a non-profit organization that primarily receives our funding from a tax levy and grants. Admission to the museum is free for all. The museum is managed by a small staff of museum professionals with the additional support of over 120 volunteers. All funds from museum rentals will help support our operating costs.

    Mission Statement:
    The Massillon Museum collects, preserves and exhibits art and artifacts to enrich our community through education and experience.

    2. Availability. Rentals are subject to the room’s availability and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Potential renters may look at the room during regular Museum hours of operation.

    The following spaces are available (see Room Specifications for more details):

  • The Fred F. Silk Community Room For meetings or parties, suitable for up to 54 seated, 100 standing. This is only available for rent to Museum members and non-profit groups only.
  • Gallery (by special permission of the Executive Director) For larger events such as meetings, parties or dinners, suitable for 150-200 people. This is available to rent by anyone, with lower rates offered to Museum members.

  • The Silk Room is only available during regular Museum hours of operation.
  • The Gallery may be available by special arrangement during regular hours of operation, or after hours from 5pm to 11pm.

    4. Rental Fees & Deposits. For the rental fees, please see Room Specifications. Museum members receive a discount. Non-profits (with evidence of their non-profit status) can rent the Silk Room for free with approval from the Executive Director.

    A non-refundable $100 rental deposit is required for the rental of the gallery. The balance is due 30 days before the event.

    A refundable cleaning deposit is also required for all rentals, and will be refunded upon the satisfactory check-out of the rental area by museum staff.

    5. Set Up & Take Down. You will be given an overview of the rental space by Museum Staff. All set up and take down of furniture and other items must be done by you within your rental time. All items must be brought in during regular museum hours and taken away immediately after your event.

    6. Furniture. You must specify which furniture you will be using (number of tables & chairs) which the Museum Staff will make available to you. You are responsible for setting up and taking down the furniture during the specified times of your rental only. The following furniture is available:

  • 10- six foot tables
  • Approximately 54 chairs

    7. Equipment. The Museum has the following resources on hand which you may use for your rental. You will specify on your Rental Agreement form what you require.

  • Utility Cart
  • Coffee Maker (2)
  • CD Player (Silk Room only)
  • Projection Screen (projector not included)

    8. Catering. There is no kitchen access. Self catering or outside catering is permitted, but the caterer must be approved by the Massillon Museum. All food and drink must be prepared offsite and brought in ready to serve on the day of the rental. All leftover food and drink, serving items and waste must be removed at the end of the event. Food and drink are prohibited in the Gallery.

    The Chit Chat Coffee Shop, an independent business located in the Massillon Museum lobby, can supply coffee and other beverages, light breakfast (cookies, muffins bagels) or lunch (sandwiches, soup, salads) by arrangement. Please contact Café Owner Wensdy Suarez directly at 330.833.0795.

    9. Licenses. If required, the Museum will arrange for a permit for wine to be served at your event. This permit must be requested at the time of booking, and must be filed 30 days before the event. If alcohol is on the premises, security must be hired to man the front door at all times. Alcohol is not permitted outside the building; failure to abide by these rules may result in an immediate end to the rental. Only beer and wine are permitted (no hard liquer).

    10. Deliveries. The Museum must be made aware of any and all deliveries (catering, linens, etc.), and these must take place during regular Museum hours on the day of your event.

    11. Decorating. No decorating may take place until the day of the event. The Museum strictly prohibits posting signs related to rental events, both inside and outside the building. The Museum receptionist will direct guests to your event. No items may be hung (taped or tacked) on the walls or ceiling. Confetti, glitter and rose petals are not permitted. Candles are not permitted.

    12. Sound & Entertainment. The Museum does not have a sound system, so you must bring in your own if required. Bands are permitted in Gallery. Renters are responsible for obtaining a temporary license for any copyrighted music played in a public setting. (Consult http://www.copyright.gov/ for more information.)

    13. Cleaning. You are responsible for the complete clean-up of your rental area, including trash removal. The Museum will provide trash bags, brooms and a mop and bucket, but you are responsible for your own paper products and cleaning supplies. A rental “check out list” is included with your rental agreement and you will be checked out by Museum Staff at the conclusion of your event. Upon satisfactory check out, you will be refunded your cleaning deposit. If the cleaning is not completed, the cleaning deposit will not be refunded.

    14. Smoking. Smoking is not permitted in the Museum. Cigarette butts must not be disposed of on Museum grounds, and must be removed with your trash. Failure to do so will be considered forfeiture of your cleaning deposit.

    15. Damage to the Museum and its collections. You are expected to take good care of and not cause any damage to the Museum building and its contents. You are responsible for any damage done by you or your guests. Any fees incurred by damage will be billed to you.

    16. Fire and Safety. The Museum is fitted with a fully automatic fire detection system. Should a fire alarm sound, do not assume that this is a test, exit the building immediately. Emergency exits are clearly marked at all floor levels; please proceed to these walking calmly and slowly. When giving you an overview of your rental space, Museum staff will point out the nearest fire exits.

    17. Injury to persons or loss of property. The Museum will not be liable for:

  • The death of or injury to any person attending the Museum for a rental event.
  • Damage to or loss of goods, articles, or property of any kind brought into or left at the Museum either by you or any other person.

    18. Conclusion. Thank you for reading the Museum’s rental policy. By signing the Rental Agreement you are certifying that you have read and accept the terms and conditions for renting. Should you have any questions or require any clarification please call the Museum at (330) 833-4061.
