Trolley Car Days:
Massillon at the Turn of the Century
by Ruth Kane
$13.95

In "Trolley Car Days," Massillon is shown in its struggle to adapt to the swift changes of the early twentieth century. Its development is traced from a "gangling teenager sprawling all over itself" in the first decades of the century to seasoned adulthood on its 100th birthday.

The book is a combination of Massillon history gleaned, for the most part, from early editions of The Evening Independent during those 26 years, and folklore dredged up from the memories of oldsters who lived during some part of that tumultuous period.

It is a chronicle of days now gone when a tug on the bootstraps instead of an application for federal funds was the way for a city to get ahead.

Letters from Joyous Jimmy:
Jimmy Rasor: The Gay Blade of Massillon
Edited by Wilbur V. Arnold
$13.00

James A. "Jimmy" Rasor was a prolific letter writer to newspapers. Jimmy Doyle, sports writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, commenting on one of Jimmy's letters, referred to him as "the gay blade of Massillon." In those days, "gay" meant: joyous and lively; merry; happy; light-hearted- a perfect description of Jimmy.

Between his birth on February 20, 1896, and his death, May 24, 1998, Jimmy published about 900 items in The Independent, 228 in the Plain Dealer, and 38 in the Chicago Tribune. His writing also appeared in the Cleveland News, Christian Science Monitor, Volkswagen Magazine, and Saturday Evening Post. He faithfully saved the letters and the family estate donated his scrapbooks and letters to the Massillon Museum. There were many subjects all aimed at amusing and informing his readers. Some of his work was published as early as 1920, and there are letters dated as early as 1927. The last letter is dated November, 1992.

This book is 68 pages, soft cover.

Coxey’s Army: The Nation’s First Protest March
Produced 1995, DVD
$10.00

While driving the rutted road north of Massillon, Ohio, local entrepreneur Jacob Sechler Coxey conceived the idea of hiring the unemployed to build roads. During the 1893 financial panic, he wrote a bill proposing that the federal government issue bonds for a national highway system and a companion "Non-Interest Bearing Bond Bill." To rouse support, Coxey and his visionary compatriot, Carl Browne, initiated a march of the unemployed to Washington D.C.

Eighty-size marchers and forty reporters left Massillon on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1894. They straggled through Ohio and Pennsylvania on foot, except for a stretch on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. By the time they reached Washington's outskirts, the army had grown to 366 recruits; there were 4,000 as they approached the Capitol Building, where another 12,000 waiting. After all the miles and the national attention, "General" Coxey, Carl Browne, and a third leader- Christopher Columbus Jones- were jailed for the petty offense of trampling the Capitol lawn.

Although the arrests diluted the immediate impact of the march, it remains significant as the nation's first protest march. Coxey lived until 1951- long enough to see the WPA jobs program, the decline of the interest rate on public bonds, and the development of the interstate highway system. Coxey was a man before his time.

Produced by Classic Videos. Winner of the 1995 "Best of Show" award of the Ohio Museums Association's Annual Visual Communications Competition.

Total runtime: approx 29 minutes. Copyright Massillon Museum 1995.

The Legacy of Steel
Produced 2004, DVD
$10.00

Listen to the stories of Stark County's steel workers while viewing photographs and footage of the steel mills. Interviews with Paul R. Barros, Thomas Gregory, William A. Grieg, Dennis Keller, David R. Leasure, Russell T. Lehman, Martin Matejko, Michael Page, John Sparks, and John C. Vaught.

"The steel industry brought economic prosperity to Stark County throughout much of the last century. It encouraged innovation and offered a vital existence to many. However, it was so much more. It was a way of life for thousands of men and women in the area. It was a hard life, a dangerous life, and a proud life. The effects of the steel industry are widespread. It is an industry that built our factories, our automobiles, our families, and our way of life. It is an important part of our history, a history that is undergoing another dramatic change, but a history that never should be forgotten." (quoted from an essay by Christine Fowler Shearer, Framework of a Community: The Steel Industry in Stark County.

Total runtime: approx. 27 minutes. Produced by Blue Leo Film in conjunction with the Framework of a Community: The Steel Industry in Stark County Exhibition in 2004 at the Massillon Museum.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH: The century-old city was the third Ohio municipality to install traffic lights to control the growing stream of personal and commercial vehicles, the new city buses, and the streetcars that continued to run for another decade.

The north side of Lincoln Way included the Conrad Hotel and the Schworm Building, which housed The Brunswick (bowling, pool, and cigars) and the Grand Theatre. Signs along the Lincoln Highway identified Lincoln Drugs and the Lincoln Theatre. On the south side, the Sugar Bowl nestled beside the nine-year-old Ohio Merchants Bank Building. The Falke Building, topped by a round shoe store sign, still anchored the site of today's Massillon museum.
