1. The Massillon Museum was founded in 1933.

The Massillon Museum was founded in 1933, following the bequest of Frank Lee and Annie Steese Baldwin of their home (the former home of Massillon’s founder James Duncan) along with seed money for a public library and museum.

2. The Massillon Museum depends on over 100 volunteers who donate over 5,000 hours of service every year.

The Museum is supported by over 100 volunteers who contribute their time and talents to the functioning of daily operations and special activities. Our volunteers are an integral part of the Museum and invaluable to the Museum’s overall success.

The Massillon Museum offers a variety of volunteer opportunities such as: baking or working at special events, preparing bulk mailings, working at the front desk and Museum shop, and assisting with research and collection projects.

3. The Massillon Museum has a skeleton named Oscar. Oscar has both scared and delighted visitors since he was donated to the Massillon Museum in September of 1934 by Dr. Fred L. Rhodes. Oscar is currently on display in our Lower Level lobby.

4. The Massillon Museum offers 10 FREE Brown Bag Lunch Programs every year.

The event, which is held in the Museum lobby, is free and open to the public; no reservations are required, but seats fill early. The Massillon Museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way East in downtown Massillon. For more information, call the Massillon Museum at 330-833-4061.

Bring a sack lunch or enjoy soup, salad, or a sandwich catered by Santangelo's. The program will begin promptly at 12:10 p.m. and conclude about 12:50 p.m. to accommodate guests who attend during the lunch hour.

Bates Printing sponsors the Brown Bag Lunch Series, which is in its fourth year. It continues on the fourth Tuesday of each month through October.

5. In 2007, the Massillon Museum hosted more than 28 free school tours and 18 free off-site programs.

The Museum offers gallery talks, workshops, book discussions, and films to augment exhibitions. The Museum hosts hundreds of school tours every year. The third grade program fulfills student history requirements.

6. The Massillon Museum preserves more than 60,000 photographs in its permanent collection.

The Massillon Museum has more than 100,000 objects in 94 different categories. The staff rotates objects in our Main Gallery and Second Floor Galleries on a regular basis so that patrons can see as many of the Museum’s artifacts as possible. With limited gallery space, less than 10% of the collection can be displayed at one time. If you would like to read more about our collection, please click here.

7. The Massillon Museum moved to its current location in 1996.

The Massillon Museum operated in the same building as the Massillon Public Library until December 31, 1994, when a capital fund campaign allowed the Museum to move to a bigger building with more storage and gallery space. The Museum opened in the current building on May 16, 1996.
